DIY
“DIY” has already become a generic term in our everyday language. It means creating, altering and repairing various items by oneself, without the professional help of specialists or experts.
Usually, DIY is associated with the market of renovation, construction, interior and garden items. That said, it is also used to define activities such as designing and making furniture and decorative accessories, repairing equipment by hand, ‘MacGyvering’, as well as handicrafts – e.g., sewing, knitting, crocheting, making jewelry or cooking. The Polish map is seeing more and more DIY facilities such as Leroy Merlin, Castorama or OBI. Their development is driven by the increasing expenditure of Poles on repairs. In 2020 the market for construction products and DIY enthusiasts recorded double-digit growth. All products from the DIY sector have increased globally in 2020, and this trend continues. It was estimated that the European DIY market in the second half of 2021 will reach EUR 21.6 billion, which means a 3% increase compared to 2020. In Europe, the German market is the largest. In 2019 its value amounted to EUR 39.9 billion, which accounted for 23% of total sales in Europe.
In Poland, the value of the DIY retail market in 2019 was PLN 36.3 billion. According to a study by GfK Polonia, in 2020 Poles spent over PLN 50 billion on renovation, construction, interior and garden products.
